- In recent years, many automated permitting and project tracking systems have emerged, some now with internet capabilities. Many are capable of being integrated with other technologies such as geographic information systems (GIS), document imaging, and field computing. But there are significant differences between the various software offerings.
- Public agencies and private companies with detailed project tracking or permitting needs may attempt to transition from a manual system to an automated system; or from a legacy system to one of the newer systems.
- LSG finds that these older, legacy systems traditionally have evolved from manual processes. Over time, steps have been added or deleted, and efforts made to adhere to new regulatory mandates – all without taking the time to review the process in its entirety. Eventually the entire process or parts of it may have been automated.

- Some processes may have become so intricate and labor-intensive that they fail, or significant portions are not followed. These add-ons almost always are not fully integrated and they almost never provide the reporting tools required of current management operations. To attempt the transition of these systems without an in-depth process review can result in the wrong system being chosen, system failure, rejection by staff or an incomplete, unintegrated solution.
